ROCKFORD, Ill. — Vocal students from Boylan Catholic High School have claimed first place in the IHSA Class A Vocal Solo & Ensemble Sweepstakes for the third year in a row.
Fifty Boylan students competed in individual and small group performances on Saturday, March 21 at Stockton High School. Students were rated on their tone quality, intonation, rhythm, technique, interpretation and musicianship, diction and articulation, and other performance factors. In addition to winning the highest score among competing teams, nine of Boylan’s 63 performances received a perfect score and six were designated as “Best of Day,” indicating that it was the best performance that a judge had heard that day.
“We are very proud of the work our students put in to win the state sweepstakes,” said Boylan Vocal Director Dan Walls. “They practiced before and after school, during their study halls and at home for months in preparation.”
This is Boylan’s third consecutive win of the IHSA Class A Vocal Solo & Ensemble Sweepstakes and fifth win in the past six years (2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019).
